Creative summary
In contemporary visual culture, ‘tree’ has increasingly become a flattened symbol, and its solidified label has obscured its true state of existence as a living being. This work takes ‘returning to the thing itself’ as its methodological path, aiming to return the visual perception of the tree's life essence: capturing the transient light and darkness when the light passes over the leaves, feeling the subtle tremor triggered by the wind disturbing the branches, and savouring the rich green colour of the tree's canopy. For this reason, the author abandons the concrete image of the tree and turns to an abstract language to express it. Through the expression of watercolour hand-painting, a large number of graphic elements are drawn and combined in the design, and the natural flow, haloing and unrepeatable contingency of watercolour are used to give these abstract graphic elements a vivid, as if breathing on their own, vitality. This way of visual expression strips away the shackles of the figurative, provides the viewer with an open space for interpretation, and allows the experience of the ‘tree’ to return to the level of the individual's vivid and fluid perception, thus combating the monotony and rigidity of the symbolism.
